Currently is back!

Our Earth Day message, a leap of faith.

A leap of faith

Currently’s publishing pause is officially over! 🎉

Thank you to each of you for patiently waiting these past few months while I worked behind the scenes to steer Currently into a more stable place.

When I founded Currently three years ago, I could never have anticipated the ups and downs in rapid succession that come along with creating a brand new weather service and publishing platform for climate revolutionaries. Like that scene in the musical RENT, sometimes the only thing to do is jump over the moon.

Tomorrow is Earth Day. From the perspective of 2024, the radicalism of the first Earth Day in 1970 feels like a distant memory. On the first Earth Day, 10% of US Americans left their homes in protest of the growing pollution crisis — one of the most widespread and effective protest movements in world history.

Today we have reached 1.5°C of global warming — albeit temporarily. We have sinking islands filled with entire cultures of people treated as sacrificial zones by the economic ruling class. We also have a new era of popular movements for political, economic, environmental, and racial justice.

Back in 1970, our elders’ collective voices drew immediate results: The EPA was founded that same year. Major legislation on air quality, endangered species, and water pollution followed shortly after.

We can do it again. We must do it again.

May you have good weather,

Currently is looking for new weather newsletter writers!

If you love the weather and you love writing, you're a perfect fit to join Currently’s team! You must be physically based in one of the below cities. Email me: [email protected] to apply.

Here's the list of cities we're recruiting for right now:

Atlanta
Austin, TX
Dallas / Fort Worth
Houston
Kansas City
London, England
Madison, WI
Milwaukee
North Carolina (Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Raleigh)
Phoenix / Tucson, AZ
Toronto, Canada
Vancouver, Canada

Here's some more specifics on what this role entails:

-This is a paid, part-time gig: about 30-45 min daily (5x per week), paid a flat $400/mo.
-It's OK for you to do this using a pen name or pseudonym if you'd like to.
-An original ~100 word daily descriptive post about what the next day will look and feel like in your city, written five days per week, Sunday - Thursday — due by 5pm ET.
-You'll be supported by our team of meteorologists for help during high-stress weather situations, like accurately describing a complex forecast for a coming hurricane.

What we're looking for most is personality and willingness to talk plainly about what you love or hate about that day's weather, with an added dose of climate/environment/progressive politics where appropriate. Here's an example of our daily NYC newsletter and our daily Portland newsletter.

Our ideal weather posts are short, but full of personality. Think of it as your daily public weather diary, letting a good friend know what to expect during her day tomorrow. The hope is that you'll feel inspired and safe enough to bring your full self to these short posts, and to our community.

Currently needs your help, today

I’ll also be conducting a few membership surveys to help make sure we’re still headed in the right direction. By June 1, we should be back to full-steam ahead with all our newsletters.

Paid members are the heart and soul of what keeps our independent justice-centered service running. Become a member today to be first in line for the new benefits as they’re introduced. Thank you. ❤️
