Happy Meteorological Winter!
Your calendar may say the season starts Dec. 21st, which is called Astronomical Winter, but for meterologists and climatologists, Dec. 1st marks the beginning of Meteorological Winter — the coldest three months of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
NOAA uses these climatological seasons to make record-keeping more meaningful. Astronomical seasons change from year to year as they’re based on sun angles and solstices and equinoxes can fall on different dates. But, meteorological seasons stick to calendar months each year.
Dec. 1st is usually when winter-like weather starts as well, so bundle up! And if you’re in a snowy area, stay tuned for forecasts of any possible snowy systems.
