Last month was the hottest June in the Houston’s history.

The city saw temperatures of 103°F (39.4°C), breaking the previous daily high temperature record for July 11th, 1998 at Hobby Airport and tying the 1980 record at Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Houstonians are under heat advisories and excessive heat warnings as temperatures reached 105°F Sunday — the hottest July day in Houston’s history. And, the state’s power grid operator, Electric Reliability Council of Texas, issued an appeal Monday asking residents to limit their use of electricity, as the heat drove up demand.

On Monday, a new, unofficial peak record of total power demand was set at 78.3 gigawatts, surpassing the previous record of 78.2 on July 8th, 2022. There is the possibility of rolling blackouts for the next few days as well.

While this heat wave is extreme, Houston and the upper Texas coast are expected to move out of the blistering, triple-digit temperatures after Tuesday. But, the heat isn’t disappearing any time soon.
