Here's what's new as Currently relaunches 🥳

I have some big news to share.

On June 1, we’ll be launching our brand-new membership benefits and begin transforming Currently into a full-fledged member-owned community focused on advancing climate justice. 

For the past few years, Currently has been providing daily local updates on weather and climate for tens of thousands of people around the world. Over the past six months we’ve taken a break to retool, and we’re coming back with an expanded promise: we’re moving Currently from a newsletter service to a news-and-climate-justice service.

Currently is aiming to be a home for climate revolutionaries — owned and directed by our members to create lasting change and advance climate justice.

During this coming summer of campus protests, a presidential election, an ongoing genocide, and what’s shaping up to be the hottest year on record — there is no such thing as half-measures.

We are in the part of our story where we’re intimately learning the difference between evolutionary change and revolutionary change. Like pushing a boulder up a hill, revolutionary change is hard work, but once it begins to take a life of its own — it can completely remake these broken systems we’re stuck in.

As it has been since we started, our way forward at Currently will be steered by the community. We want change, we want it to happen quickly, and we know there’s no better way for that to work than to do it ourselves — by supporting the people and the solutions most prepared for success.

Over the past four years or so, I’ve transitioned from an opinionated journalist into someone focused almost entirely on practical action — tangible things that can make our world better today.

You don’t need to be a paid member of Currently to help make this project a success, although we’ll have a better chance of success if you do. What I want you to do most of all is to spend a second to think about how you are showing up in the world for the people and the places you care about most.

Because words are not enough any more. We must show up.

Over the next six months, I’ll be conducting membership surveys and rolling out more features as we have capacity. I’m in the same boat as y’all — navigating that fine line between burnout and max effectiveness in the middle of <waves hands emphatically> so my main priority here is personal sustainability and durability of the community. This is what my whole life has been moving towards, and I’ll need your continued help to make it work.

Right now we are planning a skills sharing forum, incentives for decarbonizing your lifestyle, as well as several paths for putting justice and equity at the center of that work. We’ll do as much as we can, as fast as we can, but not so much that we break down in the process.

This year is going to be a year of patience — because that’s how revolutions happen — with years or decades of preparation.

When Currently started, I wanted to do everything all at once. The rest of this year will be about paying it forward, and finding a balance between the urgency of this moment and the necessity of self-care and mutual aid.

We’ll be helping you get outside, helping you live in right-relationship with nature and your neighborhood, helping challenge you to live up to your beliefs, helping connect you directly with the people and places most impacted by the climate emergency to offer direct help.

What you’re committing to here is a series of emails over the next few days, and then about once a week thereafter. You can opt out at any time, but I hope you’ll stay.
